PENITENTE RENAISSANCE MANIFESTING HOPE 2007 New Mexico Book Awards Finalist
Penitente Renaissance, Manifesting Hope is probably one of the most unique books to be published on the secretive order of the Penitentes. Several books have been printed covering the Hermandad (Brotherhood). However, what sets this book apart from others are the numerous color photos of the Hermanos (Brothers), their moradas (buildings), their artifacts, and their processions. Included in this book is a brief history of the Penitentes, rosters of over 600 Hermanos from southern Colorado and northern New Mexico, a glossary of Spanish Penitente terms, and a list of recommended reading on the Hermandad. This 8 1/2 x 11 inch perfect binding, softcover book has a rich glossy cover with 114 pages filled with over 150 color photos taken by the author. Penitente Renaissance was edited by noted scholar, Dr. Marianne Stoller and includes an introduction by Dr. Stoller. The foreword was written by journalist Juan Espinosa and the afterword by noted author Dr. Marta Weigle. This book is for scholars and casual readers alike who are interested in the fascinating world of the Penitentes. Radio personality, the late Paul Harvey, wrote a nice review of this book in Religion in American History.
